...articles about things Scottish, things Fraser, letters that members send in from all over the world, messages from our newly elected Chairman, Diolain Fraser, or news and letters (gossip) from the editor, Jesse Chisolm. The name "Fiery Cross" refers to the old Highland tradition of the Chief sending runners, in relay across the country, carrying two burnt or burning sticks tied with a strip of linen dipped in blood. This was the sign for all the Clan to gather. When the runner appeared at the door of a clansman, it could mean happy tidings, such as the birth of the Chief's first son. It could also bring the announcement of Highland games, or it could be the grim forewarning of a battle between Clans. A Clan that was gathered by the cross was moved by deep and ancient superstitions, possibly of Druid origins. An armed man it met with on the way was a portent of good fortune and victory. A stag, fox, hare, or any beast of game that was seen and not killed, promised evil. If a bare-footed woman crossed the road before the marching men, she was seized and blood was drawn from her forehead with the point of a knife. The last authentic use of the fiery cross was in 1745, to gather the Clansmen to do battle in the Jacobite cause before Culloden. Among other Clans, the Chief of the Frasers summoned his people in this way, in the final call before the downfall of the Highland feudal system.
